Authors’ Open House Christmas Edition: Angela Ruth Strong

authorsopenhouse_christmas

I am sitting in an airport in North Carolina, finally able to get to wi-fi long enough to post our first guest for this week’s Authors’ Open House: Christmas Edition. Angela Ruth Strong and I met at the airport (ironic!) in Nashville coming home from the ACFW Conference this fall. She’s delightful and I’m so glad to invite her as my guest today. Be sure to read through to the end for info on her latest release!

Treasuring the Christmas Story

Often we take the Christmas story for granted because we hear it every year, so I love it when something can bring Jesus’s birth to life for me in a new way. This year it’s been the history of the Christmas star. I loved it so much that I worked it into my Christmas romance, Finding Love in Big Sky, Montana.

Paisley Sheridan, the heroine, is reopening her grandfather’s ranch, which she renames Bright Star Ranch. Symbolic, right? That’s just the beginning. She references God’s promise to Abraham about his descendants being more numerous than stars in the sky because that’s how many kids she wants to be able to touch through her ranch. And she learns about her own worth through the idea that if God calls all the stars by name, then he’s going to value her just as much.

I even sneak in references to songs that include lyrics about stars such as those in Broken Road by Rascal Flatts: “Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars…Pointing me on my way into your loving arms.”

But all this magic started with the magi. There are three passages that could have given the magi the knowledge they needed to seek out Jesus.

  1. How could the magi have known what to look for? “Balaam prophesied, ‘A Star shall come out of Jacob.’” –Numbers 24:17
  2. How did they know when to look for it? “Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler–the Anointed One–comes.” –Daniel 9:25   Both Balaam and Daniel lived in the area where the magi came from—the east. And they were both involved with the wise men known for science and insight, which was often mistaken for magic. Thus, the magi could have known these passages. But they had to go to the Israelites for the final prophecy.
  3. How did they know where to look for it? “But you, O Bethlehem, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past.” –Micah 5:2

To me, this is a beautiful reminder that God has a plan to restore my life. He knows the how, the when, and the where, just like he knew about Jesus’s birth. And he wants to reveal it to me. But if I don’t seek God’s direction, I could easily miss it the way the Israelites did.

The magi got to be there for Jesus’s birth. Can you imagine Mary’s reaction? I mean, I was blessed to have my parents visit me in the hospital after I gave birth, but here Mary was visited by men who followed the prophecies of a star to visit her son.

In Luke 2:19, it says, “Mary treasured up all these things in her heart.” And that’s what I want stories of the star to do for me this Christmas, too.

My Christmas isn’t going to be about gifts. It’s going to be about treasure.

What are you going to treasure in a new way this holiday season?

Resurfacing, New Release & Announcement

Well, hello, friends. It’s me. Finally managing to claw my way out of the busiest time at work and home of the whole year to check in. (Can I get an Amen?)

In the last few weeks I’ve finished up a huge 365-day calendar design project, written a few short stories, edited for a few fellow authors, attended my very first hockey game, traveled to and from Alabama by car from Texas (!), and somehow managed to not lose my family or friends among all the craziness.

In more fun news, the next short romance installment of my Blue Ridge University Series releases in just a few days!  “Just By Chance” will reach inboxes on December 1 to those who have subscribed.

My First Live Interview!

liveinterview

Yesterday evening around 5 p.m. I received a text from my sweet author friend Cara Grandle. “Do you want to be spontaneous?”

Um, clearly she doesn’t know me too well, yet. Spontaneous, to me, means having any less than a week’s notice. Ha!

But something pushed me to say “yes,” and before I knew it Cara and I were Skyping for a LIVE Periscope interview with her fun gang! I was truly blessed to be her very first guest for a new series called “Meet the Crew” in which she chats with authors at all phases of the journey who are part of the community of writers.

So, for about half an hour, Cara and I chatted about my short story series that just launched yesterday, why I’ve chosen to go that route right now, and lots of other fun writing stuff.

When you have a little time, watch the clip here:

Casting for the Movies…

Do you ever imagine who would play your favorite book characters in the movie adaptation? Me, too!

Now, I realize there’s a split camp between those who don’t mind seeing what the author imagines her characters to look like and those who want to be left to their own imaginations. I’m stepping out on a limb today and sharing with you who I’d cast in the main roles in my upcoming short story, After All These Years.
AATYpromo_casting.jpgAfter you read the story on November 1, let me know if you think I got the casting right, or who else you’d cast as the leads in the Hallmark movie version.

If you’re not signed up for my newsletter yet, it’s not too late to do so in time for the November 1 release of After All These Years, exclusive to subscribers.
